EARLY MUSIC SINGERS RETROSPECTIVE CONCERT: Wednesday, June 5, 7:30 p.m., Stanford Memorial Church

ABOUT PENTECOST: Pentecost commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles, and its Mass asks for a descent of the Holy Spirit upon each believer present.
At the second alleluia verse, “Come, Holy Spirit,” the entire congregation kneels, expecting the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
The sequence gives the names of the Holy Spirit—Father of the Poor, Giver of Gifts, Light of Hearts, Best Consoler, Sweet Refuge of the Soul—
and begs the Spirit for cleansing, moistening, healing, bending, warming, ruling, asking for the seven-fold gifts.
The communion chant and the motet describe the event, “Suddenly a sound came from Heaven as a mighty wind,” and imitates the sound of a rushing wind.

For fifty-two years, Prof. Mahrt has directed the Stanford Early Music Singers.
This will be his final concert with them.
The free concert will include favorite pieces from the fifty-two years, works of Josquin, Isaac, Hofhaimer, Tallis, Byrd, Lasso, Victoris, Rore, Marenzio, Monteverdi, Gallus, Arcadelt, Ensina, & Dowland.
